GAME 1 - Monday, April 12 at Doolittle Park. Opening night was a frigid affair, an 8 p.m. game at the dusty, dark, and bumpy Doolittle Park. Jock in the Box fought back from an early deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning, but Chris' responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning. Dave Dellavechia was the hitting star for Jock in the Box, hitting a monster home run in the second inning. The defense played a fine game, committing no errors, and as usual, Harry Fazio was on top of his game on the mound. GAME 2 - Sunday, May 2, at 6 p.m. at West Side Field. Jock in the Box wins it's first game of the season with an impressive forfeit win over Merriam Motors. A solid effort was put forth to get 10 guys to the field by 6 p.m., while the demoralized Meriam Motors could only amass six players. GAME 3 - Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. at West Side Field. The "Fatboys" of 3 Guys Vending/Sherwill Landscaping/Escoto Landscaping/ Joe's Bar & Grill/ & Anybody Else who would give $50 towards the sponsorship. Sherwill and Escoto are the only Landscaping companies that have 10 college graduates cutting lawns for them. Guys who quit jobs at big firms to work in the great outdoors. And what a coincidence, they all play on the softball team! Those lawn mowing guys put a hurting on Jock in the Box with a 18-6 thrashing. One big inning by the Fatboys put an end to an early 3-2 Jock in the Box lead. Believe me, it's tough standing out in the field losing big and watching Fatboy Escoto try to hit a home run, and instead hitting feeble foul balls off of third base. Or better yet, watching Fatboy Sherwill leg out a double and then get a courtesy runner. The Sunday night league returns! At least we have two make up games as a doubleheader. Not only did we play 9 games on Sunday last season, but one Sunday we played the same team twice at the same field - once at 8 a.m. and once at 8 p.m. Huh? What genius thought that schedule up? Game 4 - Monday, May 3, at 6 p.m. at West Side Field. A tight defensive struggle in very windy conditions was blown open in the top of the seventh when Chris' scored 7 runs and went on to a 13 - 5 win. The Jock in the Box bats were again silent, scoring only 5 times. The team attempts to get on the winning track in two weeks with a make-up game on May 16, 5 p.m., at Doolittle Park. Before the game, arguments ensued with the fine umpire who demanded that our guys have a number on their back, event though it was a cold, damp, and windy night. Can someone please explain to me why in a recreational softball league anyone cares what number is on a guy's back? We have in the past written numbers on shirts with a pen, but apparently the powers that be have caught on and outlawed that. Any wonder there are only 4 teams left in the A Division? Game 5 - Sunday, May 16, at 5 p.m. at Doolittle Park. The big challenge on a Sunday night game is the battle for numbers - not which team scores the most runs but instead who will actually have 10 guys? Jock in the Box took advantage early by having 10 players to nine for the Fatmen. Jumping out with an eight-run first inning, Jock in the Box went on to a 15-9 win over 3 Guys Vending. Jock in the Box hit the ball better than it has in years, and actually should have scored more runs if not for several double play balls. Another well-pitched game and solid defense allowed JIB to pick up its first "real" win of the year and get to 2-3 on the season. The real key for this season is to just make sure you show up with at least nine guys 16 out of the 18 games so you don't forfeitt out of the league. With only 4 teams in A Division, everyone makes the playoffs. That adds up to a pretty exciting regular season, no? Game 6 - Make up from the May 19 game will be Sunday, June 6, 9 a.m., at Doolittle Park. Game 7 - Make up from the May 24 game will be Sunday, June 13, 11 a.m., at West Side Field. Game 8 - Thursday, June 3, 6 p.m. at Prageman II. The Fatmen scored some early runs and took a 12-4 decision. |
